Frequently Asked Questions

What is a herbal tincture?

A tincture is a concentrated liquid extract of a plant.

At Australian Medicinal Herbs, we extract our herbs using either food-grade alcohol or vegetable glycerine to draw out the active compounds — creating a potent, easy-to-use form of plant medicine.

What is the difference between alcohol and glycerine tinctures?

Alcohol-based tinctures

  • More potent extraction of active compounds
  • Longer shelf life (essentially indefinite when stored correctly)
  • Best for adults wanting maximum strength

Glycerine-based tinctures

  • Naturally sweet tasting
  • Alcohol-free
  • Ideal for children or those avoiding alcohol
  • Slightly less potent, so may require a higher dose

How do I take the tincture?

You can take your tincture:

  • Directly under the tongue (hold briefly before swallowing), or
  • Diluted in a small amount of water

Both methods are effective — it simply comes down to personal preference.

How much should I take?

We generally recommend:

  • Maintenance: 1 ml daily
  • Higher support: up to 4 ml daily depending on your needs

If you're dealing with heavy congestion or a stubborn cough, many people find taking it 20–40 minutes before a hot shower especially helpful.

Why am I coughing more after starting?

This can happen, and it’s often a sign the herb is doing what it’s meant to do.

Mullein, in particular, works as an expectorant — helping to loosen and move excess mucus from the lungs. As this happens, you may notice an increase in coughing as your body clears it.

How long does it take to work?

This can vary from person to person.

Some people notice a difference within a few days, while others may need a couple of weeks. If you haven’t noticed a change, it is often worth reviewing your dosage.

Can I stop and start taking it?

Yes — tinctures can be used as needed.

Some people take them daily for ongoing support, while others use them during periods when symptoms are more present.

Will stomach acid destroy the tincture?

No — the active compounds in tinctures are stable and remain effective whether taken under the tongue or swallowed.

Can I take it in tea or hot water?

Yes, you can add your tincture to warm water or tea.

Very high heat isn’t ideal, so allow boiling water to cool slightly before adding your tincture.

Will it affect a breathalyser or driving?

Taken at standard doses, the amount of alcohol is very small — often comparable to what’s naturally found in everyday foods like ripe fruit.

We recommend taking your tincture at least 15 minutes before driving.

Are there any additives in your tinctures?

No.

Our tinctures are made using:

  • Organic, Australian-grown herbs
  • Food-grade alcohol or vegetable glycerine
  • Water

We do not add flavours, colours, or preservatives.

Where are your herbs grown?

All of our herbs are grown, harvested, and processed on our farm in Australia.

This allows us to maintain full control over quality — from soil to finished product.

What if I am on medication or have a health condition?

If you are currently taking medication, have a diagnosed health condition, or are under the care of a healthcare professional, we recommend speaking with them before using our tinctures.

This is to ensure there are no potential interactions and that the product is appropriate for your individual circumstances.

Can I take this if I am pregnant or breastfeeding?

We recommend avoiding use during pregnancy and breastfeeding unless advised otherwise by your healthcare professional.

Are your tinctures suitable for children?

Yes — our glycerine-based tinctures are the most suitable option for children due to their alcohol-free, naturally sweet base.

Always adjust dosage appropriately and consult a healthcare professional if unsure.

Why choose a tincture over a tea?

Herbal teas are beautiful, but tinctures offer:

  • Higher concentration of active compounds
  • Faster absorption
  • Convenience (no brewing required)

They’re a more efficient way to receive the benefits of the plant.

How should I store my tincture?

Store in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight.

Always keep the lid tightly sealed.
